One of the most popular compositions used on our functional pots and a variety of one of a kind
pieces, is the leaf design. The embossed leaf which covers part or the whole of the pot is not a stamp, or a carving
technique, but the actual leaf. When the clay is still somewhat malleable, the leaf or leaves are 'rolled' onto
the surface with a small lithographic tool. Some pieces may have hundreds of leaves on the surface. The pot is then allowed to dry.
The leaves are then burned off in the first firing. The pot is covered with a 'glaze stain' and wiped off with a sponge, leaving
the stain only in the impression left in the clay by the veins of the leaves. Those areas are waxed so they will repel the glaze
or glazes when the pot is dipped. The pot is then fired to stoneware temperatures about 1300 degrees Celsius. This is only
one of the techniques we use, but it is always asked about.
All pots are either thrown on the wheel or handbuilt, therefore there will always be slight
variations between each piece. All of our pottery is microwave and dishwasher safe. There is no lead used in any
of the glazes, functional or non-functional.
